morelia - day of the dead 2004
Morelia is one of Mexico's most
historical and cultural cities.
It is also the center of the famous "day of the dead"
celebrations.
It's about three hours from Guadalajara, and we spent a couple of
nights
there.
This is an altar set up at the city hall of Morelia.
These
are at the center of Morelia. The church that is beautifully lit
is their
Cathedral. Every Saturday night, the main avenue in front of it
is closed as
the cathedral is slowly lit up to the accompaniment of music and
fireworks.
We
visited the Morelia city cemetery to see some of the gravesites
decorated for the occasion.
We
also went to the island of Janitzio, which juts out of Lake Patzcuaro
near Morelia.

Take a good look at the picture on
the right. The woman selling t-shirts is standing on a chair
which is standing on some other makeshift platforms. This is on
the side of a hill.

While in Morelia, we visited Sonia's host
family from
when she studied Spanish in Morelia
while she was
in college.
