Mayon Volcano
Bicol Region
May 2002

Sonia and I took a trip to the southern part of Luzon, the main island that Manila is located on.  It was Sonia's first time away from Luna -- both did very well.  Legaspi City is the main city in this region, known as the Bicol region.  It is known for the majestic Mayon Volcano - a still active volcano that is perfectly and beautifully cone-shaped.

While there, we visited the "Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave."  You can tell by the way the carefully crafted sign that this is a major tourist destination.  Actually, it was really out of the way, and even our guide hardly knew of its existence.

We were lucky to be there during the "Magayon" festival - a big fiesta in the middle of town.  While it's a little hard to see, the streets were packed with food stalls - actually more like mini-restaurants since they all had table service.  There was an art exhibition, dance exhibitions plus the obligatory all-night cock fight.

Because of Mayon's lava flows, the beaches around the area are beautifully black.
